Word Spacing & Tag Varieties
There are three basic varieties to report for this common RWS from Middlesex Council:
A: MIDDLESEX COUNCIL / NEW JERSEY (114/62, Type 1 bdr., tags to bdr.)
B: MIDDLESEX COUNCIL / NEW JERSEY (101/65, Type 2 bdr., tags to bdr.)
C: MIDDLESEX COUNCIL / NEW JERSEY (Type 2 bdr., tags between letters)
Strip A has a noticeably wider gap between the words in the top line of text than on strips B and C. In addition to the spacing difference, the embroidery tags on the strips follow different patterns, with tags on strips A and B running from each letter to the border, while the tags on strip C run mainly between the letters (see scan below). For those few RWS collectors who are also interested in twill variations, strip B is found in both TLR and TLS.
